When a section came on the market, choosing this small town—a place full of adventure and close to the hearts of this family—was an easy decision, and they began planning their dream holiday home. Joff from Sheppard and Rout Architects was charged with the design and right from the start he nailed the brief
and delivered a design that was perfect!

Construction started following Covid. Cost increases, material supply issues and uncertainty added to the challenges of this build, although having a great team on board was key to its success. Open plan living with polished concrete floors, a large garage, outdoor entertainment, and plenty of rooms for guests formed the project brief; a master bedroom with ensuite, guest room, large bunk room and a pull-down bed in the garage easily sleeps 12. Ply ceilings and walls along with kauri slat floors in the shower complete the bach vibe inside.

The large garage is a must for any holiday home with plenty of space for toys. It also doubles as a second lounge and fourth bedroom which is a great use of space. Large sliders open to the northwest and lead to the outdoor area where a pizza oven provides the perfect place to gather, cook food and enjoy company after a day up the lake – and the owners reckon, “the pizza from this authentic pizza oven is next level!”
Project detail
The exterior cladding is a combination of cedar, Coloursteel and glass. The cedar fins on the north elevation provide protection from the sun and add a great feature, which is continued inside the home and incorporated into the landscape fencing. Green lawns and feature trees complement the home and finish it perfectly. This holiday home was built for family and friends to enjoy now and into the future. A wee hidden gem in the Waitaki Valley and we love it!!
